Cups (When I’m Gone) Ukulele Lesson

https://youtu.be/oIqGzJydwac

This song was originally a Carter family song that appeared in Pitch Perfect and other places on the internet to make it a famous moment. It just so happens to have uku-shred potential so I have included it here!

There are two parts to the song. They are similar, but also different! Confused? Never fear! Let’s break it down!

The fast pattern looks like this and it happens pretty fast.

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
d D s u D u
Each chord represents one 'fast pattern'

Verses

C C C C F F C C
Am G F F Dm G7 C C

Chorus

C C F F Am Am G G
Am G F F Dm G7 C C

If you want to do the slower version, you can either split the life-saving pattern over two chords or use half patterns. Like this…

At half the tempo of the fast pattern, the Life Saving Pattern is...
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
D S D U S U D U

To split over two chords...

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & | 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
D S D U S U D U | D S D U S U D U
C C F F

or to use half patterns on the walks...

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & | 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
D S D U D S D U | D S D U S U D U
Am G F F
